Written by Doug Wright, directed by Moises Kaufman, and starring Jefferson Mays, this one-man play has attracted attention and acclaim from audience members and critics alike during its Broadway run. Based on a true story, the play examines the life of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a German transvestite who survived the Nazi occupation and the subsequent Communist regime. During her lifetime she kept an antique museum in her home, reflecting past collective lives and memories. The play is actually the story of making the play, its dramatic and realistic elements woven seamlessly together. Mays is inspirational in his near superhuman portrayal of a cast of varied characters. The simple set provides a versatile backdrop for this complicated and engaging storyline. One has to admire playwright Doug Wright's humor; as one of the characters that Mays so convincingly portrays is the playwright himself.
